The category of "AI citation tracking" did not exist eighteen months ago. Today there are at least a dozen tools chasing the same problem from different angles. Five of them are worth your evaluation budget in 2026. The others are wrappers on the same underlying scrapers and will burn out within a year.

What these tools actually measure

The category sounds simple but contains three distinct measurement problems, and most teams confuse them. A serious tool should answer all three.

Tools that report only mention counts are selling vanity metrics. Tools that report citations and share of voice across a curated prompt set are doing the real work.

The output is a weekly delta report showing which queries you gained or lost citations on. The downside is the cold start. You need to build a clean prompt taxonomy before the data is meaningful.

Otterly and Goodie - the SMB tier

For agencies and small marketing teams, Otterly and Goodie occupy the same niche at lower price points. Both start under $99 per month. Both track a smaller set of AI surfaces (ChatGPT and Perplexity primarily, with Google AI Overviews as a paid add-on). The user experience is closer to Ahrefs than to a custom-built BI tool.

Otterly leans into prompt suggestions: it auto-generates the prompts a typical buyer might ask in your category, then asks you to approve the list. Goodie focuses on competitive tracking, showing your brand citations side by side with up to five competitors. If you run a white-label agency operation that needs reporting for ten or twenty clients, Goodie's per-account pricing is friendlier than Profound's enterprise tier.

Athena AI - the open-source escape hatch

Athena is the open-source project worth knowing about for teams that need full data ownership. It is a self-hosted Python service that orchestrates prompt runs against the public chat APIs (or against Playwright sessions for surfaces without an API). You bring your own API keys for each model. The tradeoff is operational: you maintain the schedules, the parsing, and the storage. The advantage is that your prompt library and citation history never leave your infrastructure.

Athena is the right choice if your prompts contain confidential product roadmaps or pricing strategy that you do not want sitting on a SaaS vendor's servers. It is the wrong choice if you do not have a developer on staff to maintain it.

Mention - the broader brand monitor

Mention is not a pure AI citation tracker. It is a long-running brand monitoring product that has added AI citation features as a module. If you already pay Mention for press and social monitoring, the AI add-on bundles into your existing subscription. If you do not, it is a heavier purchase than the focused tools above.

Citation tracking only matters if it changes how you write. The tools that show you which competitor pages outrank you in AI answers are valuable because they tell you what the model considers authoritative.

How to act on the data once you have it

The trap with citation tracking is treating it like a rank-tracker dashboard. Vanity gains in mention counts do not pay for the subscription. The real work starts when you find the prompts where you should be cited but are not.

  1. Audit the cited competitor. Read the page the AI is actually pulling from. Almost always it is more specific, more numerical, or more structured than yours. Match those qualities and your citation share will move within four to six weeks.
  2. Add a directly answerable section. AI surfaces extract passage-length answers. A 60-word section under a question-form H2 is a stronger citation candidate than a 1,200-word essay that buries the answer.
  3. Update your llms.txt. If the page exists but the model never finds it, surfacing it in llms.txt with a one-line description fixes the discovery problem.
  4. Add structured data. Article, FAQ, and HowTo schema increase the probability that an AI agent extracts your content cleanly. Validate with Google's Rich Results Test before pushing.
